At a glance

What is tDCS?

Wearable brain stimulation technology delivering low electrical current to scalp for neuromodulation

How it works

Sub-threshold current changes neuronal electrical patterns and enhances synaptic transmission through increased plasticity

How tDCS Works

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technique that produces immediate and permanent changes in brain function. The positioning of positive (anode) and negative electrodes on the head determines how current flows to specific brain areas.

The electrical current delivered is too weak to trigger an action potential in individual neurons. Instead, it sub-threshold modulates the electrical patterns of neurons. During brain activity, tDCS reinforces ongoing neural activity at the cellular level. It alters neuron firing patterns and enhances synaptic transmission between neurons by increasing synaptic plasticity.

The tDCS Device

tDCS devices are small, battery-powered units with a control panel allowing you to program duration and intensity of stimulation. Electrodes are placed on the scalp and held in place by a head cover (typically an elastic band), with cables connecting each electrode to the stimulator.

When activated, current flows from the device through the electrodes and across the brain. Professional-grade devices include features ensuring safety and reliability, such as impedance meters and ammeters.

Side Effects

Reported side effects are minor and limited to the electrode site, including:

- Temporary skin redness - Itching - Twitching - Headache - Nausea - Dizziness

Importantly, these last three side effects occur at the same rate as placebo stimulation when tDCS is improperly administered.

What tDCS Feels Like

Users typically experience slight tingling, itching, or warmth sensations. These sensations are not painful and disappear immediately when stimulation stops.

Clinical Applications and Benefits

tDCS has been studied for conditions where modulating brain activity affects thinking or mood, including:

- Depression - Schizophrenia - Aphasia (language disorders) - Addiction - Memory enhancement

Research shows tDCS helps people learn faster and improves focus, concentration, relaxation, and meditation. Clinical trials from leading medical centers demonstrate tDCS can reduce anxiety and treat depression with fewer side effects than medications.
