At a glance

What it is

Electrotherapy uses controlled electrical currents applied through the skin to stimulate nerves and muscles, relieving pain and improving function without medication.

What it treats

Chronic pain, muscle weakness, oedema, poor circulation, and joint movement restriction.

What to expect

Electrodes are placed on the skin at the treatment site. A mild tingling sensation is felt during treatment. Sessions are typically combined with other physiotherapy modalities.

Electrical stimulation at Alimran Medical Center

Electrical stimulation (e-stim) is a core physiotherapy modality that uses natural pain-relieving mechanisms, minimising the side effects associated with drug therapies. It is commonly used to relieve chronic pain and increase the strength of weak muscles.

**TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)** applies a gentle electrical current through the skin to stimulate sensory nerves, triggering the release of endorphins — the body's natural pain-relieving hormones. TENS is particularly effective for chronic pain that is not well managed by medication alone.

**Interferential Therapy (IFT)** uses low-frequency currents to stimulate peripheral nerves, reduce oedema, relieve chronic pain, stimulate muscles, and improve blood flow via the body's opioid mechanism, producing pain relief without medication.

Benefits of electrical stimulation include awakening weak or inactive muscles, improving muscle strength and endurance, strengthening muscle-brain pathways, increasing blood supply, reducing pain, and improving joint movement by supporting associated musculature.

Contraindications include pacemakers and other electronic implants, pregnancy (electrodes should not be applied to the abdomen), active skin conditions such as eczema or infection at the electrode site, and allergy to electrode adhesives.
