At a glance
What it is
Therapeutic ultrasound delivers high-frequency sound waves (1 million pulses per second) more than two inches into tissue, creating heat and cellular changes that promote healing.
What it treats
Ligament and tendon injuries, scar tissue, joint pain, muscle tears, trigger points, and chronic inflammation.
What to expect
A moving wand is applied to the skin with gel during a brief, painless session. Thermal and non-thermal mechanisms work together to promote tissue repair.
Ultrasound therapy at Alimran Medical Center
Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves applied through the skin to produce heat and biochemical changes deep in tissue. It penetrates more than two inches, generating temperatures of 40 to 45.5°C in targeted areas. The device pulses at one million times per second, producing both thermal and non-thermal effects.
**Thermal effects** — the heat generated by ultrasound increases circulation, causes vasodilation, and improves tissue extensibility, making it useful before stretching or manual therapy.
**Non-thermal effects** — through cavitation and acoustic streaming, ultrasound causes changes in cell membrane permeability and the movement of essential ions and nutrients across cell membranes, up-regulating cellular repair activity.
Benefits of ultrasound therapy include accelerated healing, reduced inflammation and pain, improved scar tissue flexibility, and decreased trigger point pain. It has been proven effective for repair of ligaments, tendons, scar tissue, and joints.
Contraindications include pregnancy (particularly over the abdomen), malignant tissue, vascular abnormalities, and pacemakers or other electronic implants.
