At a glance

What it is

Radiofrequency ablation of the knee's articular (genicular) nerves interrupts the pain signals from a painful joint, providing long-lasting relief without surgery.

What it treats

Chronic knee osteoarthritis, failed knee replacement pain, patients unfit for surgery, and patients who prefer to avoid surgery.

What to expect

Outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. X-ray guidance is used to precisely target the genicular nerves. Recovery is brief with minimal restrictions.

Knee radiofrequency at Alimran Medical Center

Chronic osteoarthritis pain of the knee is often inadequately managed with prescribed medications alone. Radiofrequency (RF) ablation applied to the articular nerve branches (genicular nerves) of the knee provides a therapeutic alternative for patients with chronic knee pain, offering meaningful and durable pain relief.

Although surgery is generally effective for patients with advanced disease, older individuals or those with other chronic conditions may not be appropriate surgical candidates. Similarly, some patients prefer non-surgical options. For these patients, radiofrequency ablation of the genicular nerves is a successful and well-established alternative.

The procedure is based on interrupting the nerve supply to the painful joint. By creating a radiofrequency heat lesion on the genicular nerve branches, the pain signal pathway is disrupted, providing relief that can last from several months to over a year.

Indications include chronic knee pain secondary to osteoarthritis, failed knee replacement, patients unfit for knee replacement surgery, and patients who wish to avoid surgery.
