The goal of interventional pain management is to precisely identify the source of the patient’s pain in order to direct therapeutic injections specifically to that source. In cases where the underlying cause of the pain cannot be treated, an intervention is directed at the nerve that transmits the pain.

This process includes nerve blocks, nerve lesioning, nerve ablation, and injection of joint-activating substances.

All these procedures require the use of a fluoroscopy device (X-ray imaging) or an ultrasound device to ensure the precise placement of the needle during injection, preceded by a local anesthetic injection to the area.
