What it covers

The spine category encompasses disorders of the vertebral column, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, and nerve roots. Conditions range from common degenerative disease (herniated disc, spondylotic myelopathy) to congenital anomalies (spina bifida, tethered cord), traumatic injury, and cord pathology (syringomyelia, transverse myelitis).

Common presentations

Neck or back pain radiating to the limbs; weakness or numbness in the arms or legs; balance and gait disturbance; bladder or bowel dysfunction; spasticity; myelopathic hand signs; or progressive neurological deficit.

Approach

Evaluation with MRI of the relevant spinal segment and neurological examination. Management ranges from physiotherapy and pain interventions for degenerative conditions to surgical decompression and stabilisation for structural or compressive pathology. Neuromodulation is used for chronic pain and spasticity.
